No wonder this book was on the New York Times bestseller list for 2 years : it is an amazing book about the human spirit, and very uplifting. The author, James McBride, goes on a soul searching journey for his roots and his identity. He grows up in a family of 12 children with a black step-father and a white mother, but when he asks her if he is black or white she says to never mind that, water is colourless and that is what he is. This is the story of his mother, an indomitable woman, born in the 1920’s, who defies all social and religious norms, and marries a black man, begets 12 children and manages to bring them up, though very poor, and ensure their college education through all the means she can muster. This book will stay with you and will inspire you. A great read!
